Moving into the “real” world

Thursday, December 21st, 2006

So, I’ve officially graduated and I didn’t even get a ceremony from my school.  The University of Oklahoma’s College of Engineering is pretty awesome like that.  In fact now that I have a real software job I’m seeing all the holes in my education.  I’m becoming increasingly irritated by this “education” that I have received.  Appropriately nonsensical words like “craptastic” come to mind.

This experience has led me to decide to write not only a review of my education, but an in depth critique if time permits.  I’d like to start with my program in particular, but in the long run I’ll review the entire educational process.  I’ll try to push out the first part before the first of the new year.
Incidentally, and not connected in any way to my graduation, I’ve also chopped the mop.  No, it wasn’t to impress prospective employers.  I don’t play that game.  In fact I did all my interviewing and got my job long before I cut my hair.  I’ll try to post some pictures before too long.

Graduation and My Anticipated Return

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Well, it seems that my time here in Japan is rapidly coming to a close.  My graduation ceremony and subsequent night of celebration is today, and I have but a mere three weeks before I must return to the land of pie.  Ready to be back, but I’m not ready to leave.  The worst part of the stay is nigh, the goodbyes and farewells.  Neither of which am I adept at.

I will be back in The States on the 15th, but not back to the Nompton-Trans-Metro-Area till probably the 16th or 17th.  I hate moving to new apartments, and moving between countries is even worse.  At least it should prove to be an easy semester.  If you want to contact me, email is the best bet till I get a new cell phone.  Will try to get that number circulating ASAP.

Heavy Construction

Friday, January 13th, 2006

I’ve been spending all of my recent time on projects. I never understood why I had no free time, but I always just assumed it was school. Now its become apparent: 5 big projects + job = 0 free time. Then of course I stack classes on top of that…

At any rate, the projects I’m currently working on are pretty interesting:

Bion: Inspired by Wilhelm Reich III’s theory of Orgone energy, it merges art and technology. The display is made up of a cloud of small robots that communicate with each other and observers through flashes and beeps. There is also a software counterpart which will sit on your desk and provide similar interaction. I’m working on the desktop version.

EColi3D: The interworkings of a cell, even that of the simple Escherichia coli are so complex that it is difficult for students and researchers to visualize. The goal of this project is a tiered approach to creating an accurate modelling of not only the components that make up the E. coli cell, but the actual prcesses that they go through.

SIOX: The Game Developers Association @ The University of Oklahoma is working on a 2D platform game. As president of the association I’ve been acting as producer, lead programmer, and assistant designer.

Shivar: A low magic fantasy setting based around political intrigue. Many aspects of this setting make it a somewhat unique gaming experience; more realistic combat, when there is more threat there is more reason to avoid it; little to no healing; wider variety of religious view points; new magic system. This is a OGL D20 gaming system being put together by me and a few friends.

You might say thats only 4 projects, but much of my time is going into creating my new Blog www.saintonfire.com. Blogger has been holding me back too much and the call of the Tagged world has been pulling on me for some time.

Time warp

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

Yeah, its been almost 3 months since my last post, although its not from lack of content. The CS program here HATES its seniors, in addition to me just being absolutely dismally impaired at time management.

I’ve come to the point in my life when I must face my destiny. I must come clean and show the world who I really am. No, I’m not gay. I’m a SUPER HERO! My powers have been manifesting for quite some time. I thought I might relate to you some of the powers, so that you might better understand.

One of my super-abilities is that of shooting my mouth off. I have the innate ability to just ‘know’ the worst possible thing to say at just the right moment. E.g. I comically bring up a dead mother comment to a friend shortly after his mother had died; I ranted about kicking a grader in the face for the way he graded something, only to find out he was sitting in the room; I ripped on one of my group mates while he was sitting right behind me; I used the term ‘gay’ in a perjorative manner around one of my gay friends, needless to say, he was not thrilled. These are just some more recent examples of my super powers at work.

I’ve also displayed the supernatural ability to be unreadable to women, or so they relentlessly complain. Never have figured out whether this is a good thing or not. I’m gonna stick with it is, but I think that just goes back to my primary super-ability of unwittingly being a total dick to girls.

With these powers in mind, I ask you, my humble readers (still wonder who the hell you are) for suggestions for my Super Hero Name, for only then can I unmitigatedly don the mantle of a true super hero.
